Investment & buying guides

Use the public /invest, /buy, and /best guides to see a distillery's 12-month auction returns, where and when to buy it, and which bottles actually appreciated in a given year — all built on real hammer prices, no account needed.

Beyond looking up one bottle's price, wsky1 publishes three families of research guides — all public, all built on the same live auction data, and none requiring an account:

  • Investment analysis (/invest) — a distillery's 12-month auction returns, top performers, blue-chip and entry-level picks.
  • Buyer's guides (/buy) — where a distillery sells, the best months to buy it, and recent hammer outcomes.
  • Best by year (/best) — which whiskies actually appreciated (and which cooled off) in a given year.

Every figure on these pages is a hammer price in GBP, excluding buyer's premium — see Where prices come from. They're data-driven roll-ups of the auction record, not opinions or recommendations.

Investment analysis (/invest)

The investment hub lists every distillery wsky1 tracks, each card showing how many bottles are tracked for it, and links to a per-distillery page at /invest/<distillery> (for example /invest/springbank).

A distillery's investment page leads with four headline stats:

12-mo avg return The average 12-month change in hammer price across that distillery's bottles
Median return The median 12-month change — robust to a single runaway bottle
Volatility (±) How widely those returns disperse
Verdict A short data-derived read on the distillery

Below the stats:

  • Top performers (12 months) — a table of the distillery's biggest 12-month risers.
  • Blue-chip {Distillery} — its established, higher-value bottles, each with a current median hammer price.
  • Entry-level (under £150) — tracked bottles you can still buy under £150.
  • Cooled off (12 months) — bottles whose hammer prices fell over the last year.
  • How wsky1 thinks about whisky investment — the methodology: returns are measured from real hammer prices only, never projected.

Buyer's guides (/buy)

The buyer's-guide hub lists the same distilleries; each links to /buy/<distillery> (for example /buy/springbank), titled How to buy {Distillery} at auction. Each guide has:

  • Where {Distillery} sells — a breakdown of which auction houses carry the distillery, with each house's buyer's premium so you can compare all-in cost. wsky1 aggregates six houses — Scotch Whisky Auctions, Whisky Hammer, whisky.auction, Whisky Auctioneer, Bonhams, and Whisky Bull (see Where prices come from).
  • When to buy {Distillery} — the months with the lowest median hammer prices over the last 24 months (quieter auction months often see softer prices), each shown with its median and lot count, plus the busiest months for reference.
  • Recent {Distillery} hammer prices — a table of the most recent lots.
  • Buyer's checklist for {Distillery} — practical things to check before bidding.
  • More on {Distillery} — links across to the distillery's prices, distillery page, and investment analysis.

Best by year (/best)

The best-by-year hub links one page per recent year — the current year and the previous three. Each page lives at /best/<year>-whisky-investments (for example /best/2025-whisky-investments) and is titled Best {year} whisky investments. Sections:

  • Top 20 performers — the year's biggest hammer-price gainers.
  • Best entry-level winners (under £200) — the top performers you could have bought under £200.
  • Distillery winners — which distilleries rose most that year.
  • Cooled off in {year} — the notable fallers.
  • Methodology — how each year's performers are computed from price_history.

Only years from 2018 to the current year resolve; anything else returns a not-found page.

Swap springbank for any tracked distillery's name lowercased and hyphenated (the same slug used across the distilleries directory and price pages).

Notes & limits

  • Public, no account. These guides are open to everyone — signing in isn't required. To track what you own instead of researching it, see Getting started.
  • Hammer prices, GBP, ex-premium. Like everything on wsky1, returns and prices are hammer figures and exclude buyer's premium. The buyer's guides surface each house's premium so you can reason about all-in cost — see Where prices come from for the premium math.
  • Data, not advice. Returns are measured from the auction record over fixed trailing windows (12 months for /invest, the calendar year for /best). They describe what the market paid, not a forecast.
  • Coverage tracks the dataset. A distillery only appears once it has priced bottles; thinner names carry fewer performers and wider volatility.
