Import your collection

Populate your cellar in one pass — paste a list of bottles or upload a CSV, review the catalog matches, and add them all at once instead of running the add-bottle wizard once per bottle.

If you already own more than a handful of bottles, don't add them one at a time. The Import collection flow takes a pasted list or a CSV, matches every line against the wsky1 catalog, and lets you review the matches before anything lands in your cellar.

Prerequisites

  • A wsky1 account — see Getting started. Import is part of the authenticated app.
  • On the Free plan the import fills up to your 3-bottle limit and lists the rest so you can upgrade — nothing is silently dropped (see Account & billing).

Open the importer

From your portfolio, click Import (top-right, next to + Add bottle). That opens /app/bottles/import.

1. Give it your bottles

You have two ways in — use whichever you have to hand.

Paste a list

Paste one bottle per line into the Paste a list box. A line is just the bottle's name, exactly as you'd type it into the add-bottle picker:

Blank lines are ignored. Pasted lines carry no cost basis — each becomes a single bottle with no purchase price.

Upload a CSV

Choose a .csv file instead (for example, an export from a spreadsheet where you track your cellar). The bottle name is the only required column. When the first row names its columns, wsky1 maps these recognised headers (case-insensitive) and ignores any others:

Header matching is forgiving about punctuation and units — underscores, dashes, and parenthetical units are ignored, so Price_Paid, Purchase Price (£), and Price Paid all map to the same column.

wsky1 treats the first row as a header whenever it names any recognised column — not just the bottle name. So a spreadsheet headed Distillery, Price Paid, Date Bought still imports its cost basis; if no name column is recognised, the first unclaimed column is used as the bottle name and a notice tells you which one. If the first row names no recognised column at all, the file is treated as headerless, the first column of every row is used as the bottle name, and any other columns (including price/date) are ignored — the review screen flags this so nothing is dropped silently.

How the optional columns are read:

  • Quantity — a whole number from 1 to 999 (anything invalid falls back to 1). A row with quantity 3 adds three physical bottles.
  • Purchase price — currency symbols and thousands separators (£ $ € ,) are stripped, so £1,250 and 1250 both work. Negative values are dropped. Prices are recorded in GBP.
  • Purchase date — any parseable date, normalised to YYYY-MM-DD. Future dates are rejected (a purchase can't be in the future).

Then click Match against catalog →.

Up to 500 rows are read per import. If your file is longer, import the first 500, then run a second batch for the rest — you'll see a note when the input was truncated.

2. Review the matches

wsky1 matches every line to a catalog bottle and shows a review screen split into two groups:

  • Matched — a table of Your line · Matched bottle · Qty, each row pre-ticked. The matched bottle shows its distinguishing facts on one line — its vintage, age, and a reference value (for example 1982 vintage · 19yo · ref. £4,200) — and is labelled either Catalog match (a confident match) or Closest catalog match (a fuzzy best-guess) so you can spot the ones worth double-checking. The reference value is the edition's latest median hammer price (real auction data only — synthetic feeds excluded), so a wrong high-value match jumps out before you commit. Recognised purchase prices show here too (e.g. paid £75). Untick anything you don't want, or hit Start over. A live counter shows how many bottles you've selected (quantities included).
  • Couldn't match — lines with no catalog bottle. These can't be imported in bulk; each has an Add manually → link that opens the add-bottle picker pre-filled with your text.

Correct a wrong match

Whisky names are ambiguous — the same line can span several editions — so wsky1 picks the best candidate but lets you override it per row. Under any matched bottle, click Change match to open a Pick the right edition list: the auto-match plus its next-best alternatives, shown as radio options each with the same facts line — vintage, age, and reference value (ref. £X) — so you can compare what each edition is worth and select the exact release you own instead of choosing blind. Pick a different one and its label changes to Your pick — that's the edition that gets imported, not the original auto-match. If a line genuinely has no other candidate, the panel says "No other catalog editions match this line — this is the only candidate." Click Hide alternatives to collapse it.

When you're happy, click Add N bottles to my cellar — each row commits the edition currently shown (your correction if you made one).

3. What you get

  • A clean import (everything fit) drops you straight into your portfolio with the new bottles counted in your estimated value.
  • If some bottles didn't fit under the Free plan's 3-bottle cap, you get a result screen: how many were added, and the exact list of bottles that didn't land so you can upgrade to Collector and re-import them. wsky1 fills up to your limit first — it never silently discards a bottle.

Each imported bottle inherits the catalog's details (distillery, expression, vintage, age, ABV, cask, bottler) plus a default size of 700 ml and condition good; edit any of it later from the bottle's page — see Manage your collection.

Notes & limits

  • Name is the only thing you truly need. Quantity, price, date and notes are all optional.
  • Unmatched lines are never imported in bulk — add them by hand from the review screen so you confirm the exact release.
  • Free plan: import fills up to 3 bottles and reports the overflow; Collector (£8/mo) has no limit. See Account & billing.
