About Brora
Originally founded in 1819 as Clynelish (before a new Clynelish distillery was built adjacent in 1967, at which point the original was renamed Brora), the distillery closed in 1983 in the same DCL cull that took Port Ellen. Brora's character is defined by its waxy, heavy new make — a product of worn worm-tub condensers, relatively slow distillation, and long fermentation — combined with peat levels of ∼25 PPM and maturation in a mix of refill ex-bourbon and sherry casks over many decades. Surviving stocks are among the rarest and most sought-after in Scotch whisky, with single casks and Diageo annual releases frequently exceeding £5,000 at auction. Diageo restored the original distillery buildings and restarted production in 2021, using period-correct equipment and the same worm tub condensers to replicate the original character.
